HUMAN RIGHTS: 'ANY' CULTURAL DISCRIMINATION IS UNLAWFUL (Article 8 esp.). Self Willed, Tattoos, Long Hair, Outspoken, Disabled, Fiercely Independent with a healthy Kick Ass attitude to Personal Care? You may do better playing a Pathetic Victim. Read about Enablement (or is it 'Disablement') Services. Hopefully not typical, but this is Appalling, Victimising practice, which we challenge. A case of ignorant reactions producing predictable results. A Failure to recognise effects of Brain Damage & Toxic Shock. Anger is the normal expression of prolonged frustration & is not 'violence'. This debate is about keeping safe while working with angry, distrusting and frustrated people; those with some forms of brain damage, serious, distressing mental health problems, post traumatic stress reactions, learning difficulties with' behavioural issues', and attitudes and philosophies alien to the average social worker or care worker. . . . . . After more than three decades of working in the most challenging, specialist, social work fields - Serious Mental Illness, Learning Disability, Alcohol & Drugs and Community & Youth Work; I have had 3 attempted assaults upon me (minor), while doing my work. This is in spite of my direct intervention in very distressed, aggressive and often psychotically charged situations. By contrast, while employed in less challenging work and while going about my daily life, I have been threatened and assaulted, by 'normal' people, usually after they had a few drinks. I have been sexually assaulted by 'normal' people, I have been robbed, humiliated, 'cut up' by aggressive drivers, lied to, cheated and condescended to, by a number of 'normal' people; from every class and background and all walks of life. That is also the general experience of most of the clients I have supported. I really think we need to put things in perspective. Before the usual judgment about how come I found myself in these situations! Well, I am the product of childhood abuse. I refused, any longer, to tolerate any form of abuse, by anyone, to anyone. I accept the price; I am still here though, I will not give in to any form of Bullying, the price for this is fare too high. I'm a survivor you see. I know of these these ignorant reactions Let me tell you a recent story of someone who will not give in to condescension, prejudice, abuse, or neglect: Circle of Support. I have been working to support a Guy who had been having a bad time with getting the help that 'he' felt he needed. He was blind, has seizures, brain and nerve damage, trauma, largely because he was deliberately knocked down by a car. This created serious, agitated anxieties for him. He is also a survivor and won't give in to his disabilities, but wanted help to overcome them.
He also had various other, less obvious disabilities and illnesses; like an ulcer, thyroid problems and was on serious pain killer. His son died tragically and he was split from the son’s mother. Christmas is the time of year he really feels things badly. We told professionals this and asked them to give him a break. Social Services didn't. . . . IT IS NOT ALL BAD NEWS: Thank you Gregina at CVS Stratford, Thank you Tesco at Stratford, Thank you 'People's Champion', Ron Treadwell at Tesco. Thank you District Nurses in Warwickshire. Thanks also to the Police Officers, the more helpful Paramedics, Housing Officers; the individual Social Workers who made a contribution and those who eventually got a new support arrangement in place for him. You really have kept this man alive and strong enough to survive the most disgraceful neglect and abuse from what has sometimes been a concerted effort to punish him for standing up and speaking out against poor treatment and neglect of care. From time-to-time, we thought that the difficulties were at last understood and then became disappointed that they were not. There has been a lot of damage done to this person's trust in some aspects of health and social care. The damage of professional relationships arose because of a fundamental misunderstanding of the effects of some brain damage, some effects of epilepsy, of heavy duty pain killers (toxicity) and the effects of unresolved trauma of serious disability and tragic loss. Most specialist practitioners in mental health, brain injury & trauma, dementia care and in the specialist areas of neurology and the sharpest end social care, understand these agitated effects and the ager that can result form failure to recognise the symptoms and cultural experiences. The mindset and frustrations of people with any disability is poorly understood enough. I have tried to get various professionals to understand these agitated and disinhibited effects and appreciate the difficulties that some backgrounds and conditions produce. Mostly, how it is possible to work with most people, if you treat them with dignity and do not take things too personally and defensively. We have to work tolerantly with any problems that come our way. Have a heart and "Give a Little Bit". Rock on Man. We are still with you in our thoughts. LINK: Read the Original Background Story (© Dec. 2009 - Feb. 2010) The Archive File: - Over 10 years of frustrated attempts to get an appropriate service: He is an ex-Biker and has lots of tattoos, long hair and speaks his mind, doesn't like being treated as 'disabled'. He has lots of biker friends who are really worried about the lack of help he gets. He and they are very angry because of this complete lack of recognition of his underlying, diagnosed difficulties. Some professionals see him as a threat to them, because he will not put up with being told what he has to accept. Mostly they resent that he has formally complained and won his fight to get the help he needed. Yes, he gets angry, I would. He also has conditions which cause agitated behaviour and clinically understood 'disinhibited' reactions to stress and confrontation. They cut services.
The story will continue . . . . lets hope it has a happier ending. Have a heart and "Give a Little Bit". Rock on Man. We are still with you. |
