Our Mission

To Bring History Up-to-date and Back-to-Life. It is early days yet, but you will see, as this site develops, the fascinating history behind the quaint towns and villages of Wiltshire. I have listed a few sources of useful information in the links on the left. These deal with Wiltshire's 'popular' history, culture and heritage.

Images:
The pictorial display above shows a sample of some of the interesting locations of Wiltshire, all of which I have visited. I will be adding more photographic images, that I have taken over the years. Other significant images will be taken from the rich historical archives of this county. They are intended to inspire.

These images will eventually be 'Linked' (by Mouse Click) to interesting websites, official sources of information and material that I have produced, in my fascinating studies of the history & culture of Wiltshire and its people. I hope you feel that you can enjoy the county all the more for this.

In the body of this website will be some of the enjoyable activities that I have set up to bring the counties history alive. These mainly consist of Guided Walks and Multimedia Talks. These are certainly enjoyable for myself and I would hope that this excitement is passed on to you. History begins today.

Guided Walks & Talks:
My real interests is in returning to the proper basis of historical research: the life and times of ordinary people, going about their ordinary lives and coping with the political and economic consequences of their political, religious and educational leaders.

Wiltshire History:
On a more serious note, I am also interested in the 'scientific' study of history. That is, the rigorous, logical and critical search for facts and evidence. This may be evidence to support the existence of 'people', or evidence which explains the development of 'Myths' and 'Legends'.

This involves working with 'Theories' and looking for the established facts which support them, or prove them wrong. This can also be exciting and challenging, as anyone watching 'Time Team' (© BBC) may have experienced. I hope to be able to get you 'involved in this venture. We often have evidence at out fingertips, in our attics, or handed down from our from previous generations.

Communities & Groups:
I invite schools, colleges, groups and individuals to give their accounts of 'histories' they have become aware of. History should be alive: It should mean something in our daily lives, the roads we walk along, the building we pass, the people we meet and the horizons we look out towards.

I hope you have some fun here, whatever reason you have visited and whatever level you are enjoying the culture and history of Wiltshire. Please check out my Walks and Talks and, if you are inclined, periodically click on the 'Wiltshire History' button (Link Buttons on the left). See how our local research is going.

Multimedia Presentations:
We also plan to produce Audio and Video CD,s and MP3/4 files of the Walks that I do, so that you can visit (or revisit) and be guided through your journeys around the towns and historic sites. These will never replace an interactive Guided Walk, but are there for your enjoyment. Download to your Mobile, Ipod, or PDU

Another project we are developing is Audio CDs and MP3 Driving Guides. We want to make these safe for use while driving. These are simply Audio Guides, describing you journey throughout the county, prompting you what historic and cultural sites are coming up on your 'planned' journey, where to pull safely over, etc.

There are other exciting projects we hope to put your way with time, including SatNav linked Audio Guides. Something a little more informative than the usual 'ping' you get  when a 'Place of Interest' comes up on the SatNav guided journey. Keep a lookout here for these development.

Local History Forums:
Send us details of your favorite locations and journey's, places you have learned some fascinating history about, or stories about local events that family member have passed on to you, or that you remember. We will have our own dedicated forum section but will also provide your 'Interest Groups' own area.

Testimonials:

Nick Baxter is a dedicated Historian; previously a History Teacher and currently providing Talks and Walks around his favorite Wiltshire Haunts. He is a Mine of Information: Whether you want somewhere interesting to visit, to know the intimate details of Historical Gossip (The 'Facts' that is), or the location of a decent local Pub; Nick is your man. This website will never be at a loss for something new to say. Keep visiting.
